 :: History of TB

Tuberculosis is an age-old disease, probably it is as old as man himself. About 5000 years old wall carvings in ancient Egypt and fossils from graveyards in Peru are indicatives of man suffering from tuberculosis and other such disease. But the causative organism could be identified only 120 years ago when Robert Koch's discovered the bacilli mycobacterium Tuberculosis in 1882. Till about half a century after the discovery of the causative organism there was no effective medicine which could cure the disease. With discovery of Streptomycin, Isoniazide P.A.S., Rifampicin, Ethambutol, Pyaraziaamide, the disease is curable but yet it could not be eradicated. The developed nations have been able to contain the disease to a great extent but the scenario in the underdeveloped countries is rather bleak. Malnutrition, overpopulation, poverty, illiteracy and improper execution of government aids had created a situation where the disease could not adequately treated and inadequate treatment and mutation has laid to emergence of Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), which is very difficult to manage. The emergence of HIV has further aggravated the problem and the disease is likely to take an ugly turn in the days to come especially in under developed third world countries. India is no exception and even today TB scenario poses a great challenge to the entire healthcare system. In this alarming situation Non-Governmental Organization can play a key role in ant-TB movement and work as partner in prevention, management and cure of this dreaded disease.
